exact!! right click works in Design View! (and main CF button does not)
... and yes... I'll have to have my installation overhauled ...

Thank you!!! all of you!!! (finally also learnt that "control" is not the button on top of the screen, but what I would have called "field"..)

now that I learnt to try all 3 views, it really does work!!! (in what you seem to call design view)
you made my day! thank you so much!!!

FWIW, I have never noticed that button and have always used right click on a control.
So I have learnt something again.

Be aware that the CF (especially for dates) is fixed, in this case 8 Feb 2021. To change the formatting for a different date, say 15 Feb 2021, you would have to manually edit the rule(s) for the date control EVERY time you want a different date to display RED.
I found: Conditional Formats on Access Forms, that seems to indicate that you could use VBA to change the CF rule(s). I haven't tried it yet, but maybe you could have a form with an unbound text box control to enter a date. The VBA could modify the rule on the fly to the date value from the unbound text box control.
There is an example dB to download at the bottom of the page.... And a continuation 2nd page.
