Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I am following your advice.

The table on which the query is based has a number field for the key. The number must be less than or equal to 2.

I then use a query to construct the database selector text from the number field.

The final form looks like this:

    Again, thanks for your help

Well if you're happy then so am I. Not that I get the comment about a number key being less than 2 but then it doesn't matter I guess.
    Good luck going forward!

Umm, just stumbled on this, which might be useful to anyone with this problem in the future. It might be possible to control the position of the dialog:

I also thought of minimizing the form then restoring it after the selection was made, but I'd still go with what is simplest, and that seems to be what you ended up with. To size/resize forms might require turning off screen updating at some point in order to prevent unwanted visual effects, which can be risky and might end up staying off. Besides, you have a tabbed form there, and I don't think they can be sized. You'd need to use individual windows and not tabbed forms, or at least make this one form a popup. I tried it and it doesn't look too bad, but it all depends on what you think of a form that pops up and down from/to the bottom of the db window.
