Split Access database error message "unrecognized database format"

We have a database we have been using for several years. Early in 2018, I split the database because of issues due to multiple users being in the database at the same time. We had no issues until December 2019. We started receiving the error message "Unrecognized database format" and the message was associated with the back end of the database. I would have the user close the database, I would open the back end. Upon opening, I would receive a message that Access would attempt to recover the database. It typically recovers with no issues, although this morning I had to do a restore from yesterday afternoon. This was the only time I had to do a restore from a previous date.

The back end resides on a network drive and each user has his own front end residing in the local documents directory.

We are using Office 365 ProPlus and the version is 1902 on my pc.

    Any help appreciated.

could it be an older version trying to read a new version access format?
    or
    corrupted db?
    or
    passworded db?

Everyone is supposed to be on the same version of Office, build 1803. What is the impact of one user Office 365 ProPlus and the version 1902 and another user being version 1701?
