    Normalization of Titles

Every time l look at Unit Titles, I feel it’s un normalized because of the repeating parts is some titles. I have attached full (-80%) listing in a workbook. Out of 3243 records a lot fall into one of these repeats:

    1. First Case
      1. The Calgary Regiment, 1st Battalion
      2. The Calgary Regiment, 2nd Battalion
      3. Etc.

    1. Second Case
      1. 102nd Regiment
      2. 103rd Regiment
      3. Etc.

    2. Third Case
      1. 50th Bn. C.E.F.
      2. 51st Battalion CEF
      3. Etc.

    3. Fourth Case
      1. ‘A’ Battery, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery
      2. ‘B’ Battery, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery
      3. Etc.

Most (90%) of these have subunits A ... D plus two, which again get tack on the front (or back) of the title. I have not written those out because of the repetitiveness of it. (and a little lack of need).
As with all things military, Units are formed with regimented titles and as time goes each unit makes it individual. Because there is so much regimentation, there are a hand full of abbreviations that get used (sometimes in the formal title and mostly not), that can hide the repetitiveness of it. Same goes for placing the sub-unit in front or behind (I’m starting to wonder if it also an era thing).

So, the question “Is this table “Normalized”?

I think ‘June7’s tag line may fit here, "Normalize until hurts, denormalize until it works.".

Thank for Looking and thinking about this

Hi I think you need a table for Unique Title Abbreviations and then a related table for Unit Titles.

Then on a Form you would need 2 Combobox's.

1st ComboBox would list all Abbreviations
2nd Combobox would then only list those Titles associated with the Abbreviation selected.

I have also a section linking off UnitFacets giving: Country, Service, Force, Branch, Role, Size and Symbol for each unit with a date. These Facets don't change a lot over time, and Willing to repeat all the data within a record to change one. I have done one table instead of seven, because most of the time they change change at the same time

The two common sets of abbreviations are: Size and Branch, Both of theses are currently held in two different tables, because they also change over time.

Given the above I don't understanding how to work in or change to fit in your method. If you are talking about creating the Titles, I agree with your approach, but these are historical titles used for a period of time.

Thanks for suggesting something and look forward to more ideas

    Hi

You say "but these are historical titles used for a period of time"

Yes, to manage these changes all you need is to create a Main Form based on the Abbreviated Title and a Subform to deal with all related Titles.
