Data Link to Mail merge won't work when there is a password on the database

I have created a mail merge in word using the data from a database query. All seems to work well until I put a password on the database. when I run the merge wizard and select the option link the data to a document I get an "Error has occurred not a valid password" message. When you click OK it opens up the data link properties box. Just wondered if anyone has encountered this problem and is able to advise on a solution. Any help much appreciated.
