    Too many fields defined.

I have a select query that has not been modified recently but when I run it I get an error message "Too many fields defined." The query is based on two tables that also have not been modified recently. Neither table exceeds the 255 field maximum.

I've compacted and repaired the front end and the back end databases, and I re-created the tables using copy/paste structure only and appended all the records from the original tables. No luck. Any suggestions?

it may be the error description is misleading since (as I think you have found) it refers to changing table design.

does each user have their own copy of the front end?

is there code which affects the report structure in any way?

If there is code involved, have you decompiled (different to compact/repair)?

you mention you get this error when printing - what about review?

You may not have noticed, but I revised my initial post. The problem seems to be the query behind the report. When I run the query I get the "Too many fields" error.

The query is based on two tables linked by a common field (InvoiceNumber). Neither table exceeds the 255 field limit. There are 102 fields on the definition grid. I have un-compiled and re-compiled and re-created both tables using copy/paste structure only. No luck.

I replied to the post as originally posted which said the query ran OK and the issue was with printing the report that uses the query.

I still maintain the error description may be misleading so all my questions, with the exception of the last one, still apply. With your revised post I would also suggest copy the sql to notepad, create a new query then copy and paste the sql from notepad to the sql window of the new query. This should get rid of any corruption that may exist in the query.

102 fields is a very 'wide' query. It would also be helpful to explain what the query does.

Had a sudden brainstorm: I re-created the query from scratch. It works perfectly. Thanks for all your suggestions.
