Adding totals to a parent form from a child

I am new to Access and I want to create a parent/child form where the parent holds invoice information and the child holds line items for the invoice. I want the parent to have a field that totals all the line items.I cannot work out how this can be done.

Textbox in subform footer with expression to Sum([fieldname]).

Is subform in Datasheet view? Either use the Totals button on ribbon to open Totals row or have another textbox on main form that references the subform textbox.

This sum should not be saved into parent record, calculate when needed.
