    SharePoint and Access 2010

I was given the task of writing a project management database. This database will be used in two separate facilities separated by about 75 miles. The database will be used to keep track of upcoming projects. Management in both places need real-time up to-date project status information.
How is the best way to do this? I have Access 2010 and have been looking at the SharePoint stuff. This will be a runtime application. Does one copy of SharePoint cover everyone? What about security? This will be future products for my company so this information has got to be secure. I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to build any applications with this and could share some ideas.
One of the ideas that was kicked around was keeping everything up to-date via e-mail. Any ideas on using e-mail or using Microsoft SharePoint would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks in Advance,
    K. Smith

Sharepoint is a large Microsoft product unto itself. As its name implies, it serves the role of sharing documents/files/data and that includes Microsoft Access tables.

A geographically distributed, and potentially browser enabled, database involves a variety of parameters involving networking, costs, security, and user experience which must be balanced.

If, as you mention, 'real time up to date' is the requirement then you should look at a web enabled solution in which case Access/Sharepoint is one approach. In your local area are probably web developers that will offer a solution and which may use totally different technology - and for which may not matter strongly because you will focus on the features & user experience primarily rather than the development environment.

Besides using a web developer or purchasing and running Sharepoint inhouse one can also consider: Intuit offers an online database Quickbase. www AccessHosting com offers sharepoint hosting. www eqldata com offers browser enabling an Access applicaton.

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure which way we are going to go with this. Is updating data via e-mail a viable or even a do-able option?

And do you know if each PC that will use SharePoint (if we go that route) will have to have their on copy of SharePoint?

    Again Thanks,

There is a data entry via email method in Access2007.
Sharepoint is a big product. It runs on a server, and not on anyone's individual PC as does Access.

Both topics require that you get an Access2007 textbook and read these topics in depth. Sharepoint has its own books and its own certifications in addition.
