wild card * or % which one to use

    Hello chaps
I found that when I used a wildcard "*" in a query it doesnt find anything so I looked
up and found that I should try "%" which is something to do with another type of code.
What else should I be knowing ?? or how do I set my access to use the wellknown "*"
    as a wild card.
I am using office 365 and the access version that comes with it.
    many thanks
    Fred

In Access Options, Object Designers, make sure Sql compatible syntax (ANSI 92) is unticked

I did read in another forum thread that the latest Office 365/2019 update is causing problems in this respect.
    Suggest you google the issue

Just to say I've checked in the latest Access 365 update (1812)
For me, the results are the same as in Access 2010

If Use SQL Compatible Syntax (ANSI-92) is unticked, Access uses filters such as Like "*S*"
If that option is ticked, you have to use Alike "%S%"

Note the use of Alike instead of Like
Also that after changing the option, Access must be restarted for the change to be implemented.

What I had read is users reporting that the latest version of Office had changed the default option so the SQL compatible syntax box was automatically ticked
