format number filed to significant digits

Anyone know how to to have a report field display a number to significant digits rather than decimal places? I have a bill of materials report with multi-nested subreports which can display anything from 0.001 up to 1000. There's no point in having 3 decimal places on figures as high as 1000, but every point in having very low numbers display 3 decimal places. It may be simpler than I thought, but can't seem to find a way to do it.

Have you tried setting the format property of the Control that displays this field to General?

No I haven't as yet. I was thinking that some kind of formula might do it. I'll give it a try. The report control gets its data from an ODBC linked table that has fixed formatting, so it has to be done through the report or query somehow.

It may be a string value in which case another strategy will be needed. I think simply turning it into a number will let the Format property work.
