    Sequence number a seperate field

    Hi Guys

I need to store a sequence number that is for some “Units” is also part of the Title.
    Examples:
    Short Title Sequence Note
    S. Wales Bord. 24 the South Wales Borderers
3rd Bn, S. Wales Bord. 3 3rd Bn of the South Wales Borderers
1st Brecknockshire Bn. 3.5 A special Bn of the S. Wales Bord.
Sussex Yeomanry 42 a non numbered unit
1/5th Bn, K.O. Sco. Bord. 5 the original 5th Bn of the Regt.
    2/5th Bn, K.O. Sco. Bord. 5.2 2nd 5th Bn formed
    3/5th Bn, K.O. Sco. Bord. 5.3 3rd 5th Bn formed
    6th Bn, K.O. Sco. Bord. 6
    7/8th Bn, K.O. Sco. Bord. 7.5 7 & 8th Bn’s combined, where seperate

Now, I’m showing the sequence number as a real number (not an Integer) to allow for easy mental conversions. Some regiments expanded into the 20’s for Bns, with up to 4 Bns doing the splitting thing, making an integer sequence number conversion “interesting”.

Note the 5th Bn was title that until the 2nd 5th was formed.
Note that the Americans use a different Ordinal number system (st, d, th) in their titles.

Now the question to the group “is the sequence number a separate field?” I ask that because in most cases It can be derived from the title (or the other way around), but not all. The Title record will be stored as a multi field entity to handle additional data (eg. nick names, full names, abbreviations, formal names, service, branch, etc.).

    All comments welcomed

think that answers the question - it has to be a separate field. However you haven't explained what you would do with the field once you have it. It seems to be multi purpose in that the same phrasing means different things - e.g. 3/5th Bn and 7/8th Bn which implies you need another field to differentiate between formed and combined - and what happens if the 3/5th Bn combines with the 6th bn?

The sequence number (aka Seniority) will determine the display order (listing). In the military (British) there are about 5 things that determine the seniority of a unit, and it may change over the life of a unit, but usually not.
on the merger question depending on the resulting unit title (could be 6th, 3/5th, 5/6th, or something else) would determine where in the seniority list it would go. Most likely it would retain the lowest number (but not always).

Using a separate field, would that be a real number format?

Note that 7/2/25/76/2/24/6 in Nov 1914 would be its full
sequence number (K3, Inf, 25 Div, 76 Bde, Line, 24 Regt, 6 Bn (not all confirmed #'s)).

probably - but might be text providing to preserve sort order you put in preceding zeros if required - e.g. instead of 1.5, 2.5, 10.6 it would be 01.5, 02.5, 10.6

Thanks for the answer. Interesting thought about using text.
