    ridders52 awesome explanation thank you!

    One more question:
The code for setting up connections do you run once or every time when user opens FE?

    Best,

Back in post 13, you said
    no further questions

Anyway, the answer is ONCE - when installing the update and BEFORE distributing the new FE via the shared network folder.
    Once connected, it stays connected.

As already explained, I distribute the FE as an EXE file via my website.
The administrator at each client downloads and installs it then rune the app.
This automatically relinks the FE to all external databases.
Some other updates may also be done e.g to add fields to linked tables.

One the update is complete, the new FE and other related files are copied to the network upgrade folder
When individual users click the program shortcut, they re actually running a separate utility database.
This checks whether there is a newer version on the network and if so, copies the new files to the user computer and opens the new version.
Otherwise the current version is opened

I use a professional installer package which creates an EXE file with all files for distribution in a folder structure.
It also allows me to make registry changes, run scripts etc etc
I use SamLogic Visual Installer Pro but other similar packages include SageKey (expensive) & Inno (free)
