Access version query - must it match the Office version?

I have Office 2003, under which I have developed a relatively simple Access database for club membership.

I now wish to hand over the membership work to a person who has Office 2007, without Access. Can he install Access 2003 so as to maintain compatibility for the database, and use this alongside his Office 2007? (ie I am not sure if Access is a stand-alone piece of software, or is in any way dependent on other aspects of Office.)

They probably can, but there's a free runtime version of Access 2007 available from Microsoft. To your question, Access can be purchased separately from Office.

I should clarify that the runtime version will allow them to use the program, but not make any design changes. Don't know if that's a requirement.

I had considered that. If design changes includes modifying Queries, then yes. I suppose it is also possible that the new user of the system might wish to make minor database changes in future, so I think that isn't a runner. Also, I have read that Access 2007 onwards uses a different access method SQL, so may not be 100% compatible with my 2003 database?

What was really concerning me is whether attempting to install a copy of Access 2003, which can still be purchased, on a machine which is using Office 2007 (without Access) would be in any way hazardous.

I'm not sure what SQL method you mean, but I don't think there would be a problem. I ran Access 2000 apps on machines with 2007 on them.

In any case I don't think there would be a problem installing Access 2003 on a machine with Office 2007 on it. I had a development machine with bot 2007 and 2000 on it and they didn't fight.

Thankyou for your replies. I think I now have the confidence to go ahead with either option.
