Opening/closing Anything in Access is slow!

I have not used Access in a while, but I am frustrated because general opening and closing of files/queries is SOOO slow! I am running Windows 7 64 bit with Office 2013 32 bit installation (had too many issues with 64 bit version). It takes 2-3 minutes to open or close simple queries in design mode. I actually get so tired of waiting, I do other things and then forget to go back to what I was doing. Everything is generally slow. Opening/Closing forms in design mode is the same way. I have tried to review other postings but most seem to refer to poorly written queries or code. My applications are VERY simple. There is no reason that these should take this long. It is making my time spent with Access less than fun.

Generally, they apps run pretty well. Then, when I close Access, it compresses FOREVER! Weird. But that is fine. Editing is the real problem.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Is this a split database with the backend on a network?
