    Question SQL Server

    Hello all,

I'm looking into buying SQL Server 2014 Standard Edition.

I would like to move my split end back end to the SQL Server, however I'm having a little confusion with all the different licensing out there.

Can someone explain to me CAL's or Open license, or Core license and which one I should go with.

I have 20 computers that will be accessing the SQL Server.

    Thank you!

There was just a thread in an MVP forum about this, and if it makes you feel better few people seem to have a grasp on this, me included. These were recommended:

That said, have you considered the free version, at least to start out with?

    Thank you for the response.

And no I have not tried the free version. Just to be clear the free version you are talking about is titled as "Express" correct?

Yes. I haven't really used it myself, since my employer has the full version, but figured you may want to try it given the expense of buying the full version.

Good luck! There's a lot of power in SQL Server, but there's a learning curve.

    Hey Paul,

I've installed it and got it up and running.

Question: I have a split database right now, back end contains only tables, front end contains several forms and queries. What's my next step?

Do I import my back end data to SQL Server, and then link front end to the new SQL Server?

Basically yes. Long ago I used the Access upsizing wizard to move tables and it worked fine (I normally create tables in SQL Server to begin with now). There's also a SQL Server Migration Assistant, which I haven't used but have heard works well. You can probably also just export from Access using the External Data tab. You'll need an ODBC DSN. I create a File DSN on the server using the SQL Server Native Client, which means I don't have to create a DSN on every computer. The computers need the Native Client driver installed, which I do when I purchase and set up computers.

Is this the DSN? (master)? At the bottom of the properties tab it says this is the "name of the connection."

That doesn't look familiar, though that could be version related. Where exactly are you seeing it? I'm talking about setting up a DSN in (depending on OS version) Control Panel/Administrative Tools/ODBC Administrator

    Hey Paul,

So i found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZDJKxEy_ek

And I managed to replicate everything and was able to figure out how to hook it up to my front end forms.

I feel like this is a long route to go, but everything is working and the data is being updated on the SQL Server from my Access front end forms.

Haven't looked at the video, but glad to hear you got it working. Many db's will work fine right away, but you may find yourself wanting to learn stored procedures, views, pass through queries, etc. Also, don't forget to set up a backup in SQL Server.
