    Greetings.

I worked with Access95 back in the day but never really got under the hood. I mostly entered data and modified queries. I know now that it was a big mistake not to learn more about Access and databases in general.

In 2011 as part of my work in tech support I began to work with MS SQL in regard to a software suite we sold to end users. I learned a fair bit but am still nowhere near an expert.

In 2014 I started my current job at a not for profit and found my new co-workers were using a Google spreadsheet to track inventory. It was slow, we had to enter redundant data and data loss was common.

They use an online database for entering case notes but it has no function for tracking inventory. Their current license for MS Office 2014 does not include Access 2014 but thankfully Access 2007 is still on everyones PCs. I fired up 2007 and started building a simple inventory system for my department. I split the database and dropped the back end on the share drive. I have created custom front ends for myself and the two other people in my department.

I didn't like the idea of my database back end just hanging out on the share drive where anyone could mess with it so I had our IT contractor install MS SQL Express 2014. Now we're talking.

I am just now in the beginning stages of redesigning the whole thing for deployment on the SQL server. Woot! I have discovered that I really like being a (de facto) database admin. Nothing like discovering your desired career path at the age of 42.

    Welcome to the forum!

My discovery was at age 54. Went back to school at 48 yrs old, got AAS in Geomatics, inherited an unfinished db 6 yrs later. No prior experience with db or programming (other than a couple of computer classes).
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.
