Change Data Types in an ODBC Database Table

I am unable to change field types in the design view for my table. The table is being imported as an ODBC Table with the option of "Link to the data source by creating a linked table". The database is coming from an SQL Express database (ArcGIS SDE Database). I am trying to change several fields, (number to text, lookup wizard, etc). When I change the data type in the design view, it is unable to save and displays this message: Operation is not supported for this type of object.

My assumption is because this is an external table from an SQL Express database. I tried editing the field in ArcGIS, but was unable to get the results I want. If anyone has any thoughts on how I can edit the field types in design view for this table it would help a lot.

    Thank you.

I use the SQL Server Management Studio for SQL Express. (Free from MS)

I haven't tried it yet, but you might be able to create a pass through query that uses the "ALTER" command.

But you cannot open a linked table (native Access or ODBC) and edit the design.
