Multi Users on backend of split database

I seem to be having issues with several users accessing the back end of my database. Is there a setting I missed somewhere?

Does each user have their own copy of the front end on their own machine.
If this helped, please click the star at the bottom left of this posting and add to my reputation . Many thanks.

Sorry, I should provide more detail.

Yes, each user has their own copy of the front end saved to their desktop.

I split my access database and the backend is on a shared drive but the file locks when a user opens the front end on their desktop. It denies access to anyone else trying to open their front end. I thought that splitting the database would make it accessible. I've gone through the Access Options and made sure the Default Open Mode was Shared. Is there another place I should be checking?

Also, in Access Options/Advanced the Default Open Mode should be Shared. If neither of those helps, it might help to know what the issues are.

Sometimes, I'm able to open both front ends but not able to edit on either. Other times when I have a front end open on one laptop and try to open another front end on another laptop I get this error:

Could not use\\shared area....\PC Tools Database_be.accdb; file already in use.

To confirm, the default open mode is set to shared on the front ends, right? As opposed to the back end? Is the back end in a folder that the users have read/write permissions to?

Yes to all. The front end applications are "Default open mode" Shared and the backend is stored in a folder which is read/write accessible.

The backend should also be set to shared, correct? I just want to make sure. Both the back end and the front end are set to shared.

Even when I go into the back end and open a table it locks the entire DB with LDB file being created in the shared area. My Back end DB is stored on a Window's server so there shouldn't be any compatability issues.

It was a folder permission issue. Got it solved. Thanks to all who responded
