    Problem opening file, Error 3197

I was working on a data base at home when a power outage occurred. I'm the exclusive user, but when I try to re-open the file, I get "The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time. (Error 3197). I've tried copying the file and giving it a different name - that didn't work. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Can you open the file while holding down a <SHIFT> key?

Sorry this took so long, but power's been out most of the day. Tried it with the Shift key, but still no luck.

Sounds like you may have a corrupt form that is loaded when the system runs. Try importing everything into a new, empty mdb and see if the problem follows.

Good thought, but I get the same message when I try to import from the file. Tried to get in with Excel also, but no go.

Ouch...I hope you have a recent backup. It may be your only choice now.

Sigh... lost about a week's worth of work. I won't be caught without a UPS again. Thanks for replying.

You need to delete the *.ldb file and then open/close the mdb. Contact your network guy who should have 'special' type permissions to delete the *.ldb file.

The error you're getting though indicates someone possibly still has the mdb open. If you're absolutely sure no one does and you still see an *.ldb file, it's possible the *.ldb file is corrupt in which deleting it and then opening/closing the mdb will fix.

You can also try creating a new mdb file and then importing all the objects from the locked one into that.

See here to prevent future problems:

    Hello,

I found solution for your problem on Microsoft support forum (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182867), read this post carefully you will find answer. Even though if above article couldn't solve your problem, you can use Access Repair Software to repair your corrupt access files. In this ways you will not lose your weeks of work

Thanks for this post. I was experiencing this error because I had a query in a macro that was trying to update a memo field that contained corrupt data. I removed the part of the query that was updating the memo field, and now I no longer get the error.
