    Variable entry with leading zeros

I'm trying to create a database for valve numbers. The numbers can be either 5 digit or 6 digit format. The first two numbers are area indicators and I need to be able to have a leading zero. I know how to make it for just one format, i.e. six digit format in design view is 000000. But I don't know how to make it so five number formatted numbers stay five numbers or six number formatted numbers stay six numbers. If I use 00000 and try to enter a six digit valve tag number it drops the leading zero. If I use 000000 and enter a five digit number I end up with two leading zeros instead of just one. I do not want to have to use two different columns.

You might be better off storing your valve numbers as text.
