what I can't find is where the reference is occurring ]------AURGHHHHH

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (hugely !!!)

fyi, I've ran into this same problem before in an almost exact same mess (literally the same, report and all), and was able to find it... but TONIGHT

    Start scavenger hunt.

You could acquire a third-party add-in that can do a search of the entire db (except data) and report where that reference can be found. Two add-ins discussed in forum are VTools (free) and Rick Fisher's Find & Replace (<$50)

just to confirm.... VTools is an Excel add-in, not ACCESS (correct?)

I thought it was Access add-in as has been discussed in other threads. I've never used it. I use Fisher's.
