Open source routable mapping software with API

    Hello all,

Does anyone have any experience using free open-source mapping software that allows for vehicle routing given two GPS coordinates without internet connection? If so, do you have any suggested links to look into.

I would prefer one that has an API that would allow me to embed things into Access.

    Thanks in advance!

The only thing I ever used was MapPoint. It is not free but you have all of the files stored locally. Go online to get updates. Make references to MapPoint and MapPoint controls. Cost is just under $250.

Have you tried Google maps? It isn't necessarily free, but if you are doing a huge number of transactions per day, it may work.

@ItsME - I have a feeling I would need to get each 12 tablets a license of MapPoint right? Which if that's the case, would be too expensive.

@orange - I currently use Google Maps API for my desktop front-ends since they are almost always connected to the internet. However, it isn't a usable solution for tablets that won't have a data connection. Unless you meant that Google Maps allows locally caching map files of some sort for routing? If that's the case, I'm gonna Google search for this again haha

You are required to register each machine's copy of MapPoint. So 250 X 12, yes.

A copy of MapPoint can export static, preplanned, routes as HTML files. These files are copyrighted by Microsoft and can not be shared. I am not offering legal advice, nor am I a professional. I believe, under the Fair Use Act, you can view (for private use/consumption) these exported HTML files on any computer that is owned by the same corporation/party that legally produced the HTML files.

    thebigthing313,

No, I was only considering constant Internet access. If you hear anything about an offline - Access "add-in" type thing, please let us all know.
