hmmm...so i opened your utility with 2003 and had it unlock the troublesome mdb, but it says that it could not proceed because it did not have access to MySysdb. This was after I joined the system.mda workgroup file. when i start up access 2003 as user Admin, I cannot access Tools > Security > User and Group accounts since I don't have read permissions on "MySysAccounts"

this is getting stranger and stranger...

You can't join to that system file. It is not compatable.

You need to convert the utility to Access 97 then try again.

Don't worry about joining the to the system file use this shortcut instead. But Modify it to suit your needs.

    "C:\Program Files\Office97\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" /wrkgrp "C:\Location of your security file\Name of File.mdw" "C:\My Utility"

still no luck; i'm getting the error that i don't have permission to access MSysDb, and the debugger launches to highlight "db.Properties.Append prop". Unless you or anyone else who comes across this thread has a super-quick solution, I think its best that I stop wasting your and the forum's time on this issue. might be time to call it quits with this ancient database, and, again really appreciate your help

    Well I have to agree.

    Time to move on.

There is one last thing you might try and that is to contact Joan Wild.

I think she is the best with regards to Access Security.

Google will no doubt find her.

    viewing mda/mdw security

Not sure if this helps or not, but if the mdb is protected via an mda/mdw file, you can use this utility to view all the users and passwords contained within that file. You can then open the db (using the shortcut which has the mdw/mda parameter) and supply one of the logons and passwords.

Using a logon/password which has full rights, you could then export the forms you need to a non-protected mdb.

Again, I'm not sure if this helps but it's something you could try if you think it might be a permission issue.

I couldn't find the copy in my folders but here's a link to where it's at:
