Linking Excel Table in Access 2013 causing Access to shut down

I am trying to link an excel file (.xlsb) into Access 2013 running on Windows 8 (External Data-->Excel). It will first act like it's working, but it will just shut Access down after a couple seconds of churning and ask for a Backup to be created or it will restart (no rhyme or reason as to which you will get). I've tried a Compact and Repair. I've tried rebooting. I've tried renaming the excel file(although I have other files with the same naming convention linked), but no matter what I do, it will not accept it. I've tried doing just a straight Import....same results. This file, along with a others that are already linked in this database, are stored on a network server. Any help is appreciated as my frustration mounts.

Does a similar thing happen when linking to .xlsx?

I just changed the extension of the file from .xlsb to .xlsx.....now it will link. But this makes absolutely no sense. All my other links are .xlsb and two other files are the same files just from different days. My files are fairly large and it is not necessary for them to be .xlsx, so I save them as Binary to save space. Why would this be the cause of Access shutting down?

Even though this worked, I would still like to understand the "why". Any idea why an .xlsb file would cause Access to shut down....especially when all my other linked tables in the same database are .xlsb?

I don't know. Maybe there is something in that Binary file that should be handled by an Excel feature unavailable in Binary. It is not a perfect explanation but what else is there? You already mentioned other Binary files linking just fine and they are also large, so….

I figured it out. You don't need to change to .xlsx. I just got a new computer with Windows 8 and Office 2013. The problem is my files that I am trying to link were saved from Access 2007, all I had to do is reopen those .xlsb files and just SAVE again. Boom. Done. Fixed....Access accepted the files. Happiness again!
