    Going Old School

    Hello all,

I've been on a six week break and have started a new assignment at another local corporate headquarters, won't say who. For the first time in 12 years I have to commute. I've had the good fortune up till now of being within walking distance. 20 miles each way won't sound bad to most people, but like I say, I've been spoiled. Work is work, though and so are corporate cultures. This one at least allows me to wear tennis shoes and blue jeans if I want to.

The oddest part of this new assignment is the heavy use Access throughout the department, maybe the company. These databases are all in versions 2003 and earlier and rely almost universally on macros, which I hate. They are reluctant to go VBA, but that's where I'm going to have to take them if they want much development. Also these databases have been developed by dozens of different users over a dozen years, most of whom never heard of naming conventions. Queries are named with sentences in some cases. Here's one "Delete Qry older than oldest date on stmt NOT CURRENTLY USED", here's another "Match Stmt to Qry FOR AGING export (45+)". Renaming these to something sensible and debugging the macros will not be fun, but there it is. Mostly just wanted to say hello here and watch out. I'm back.

    Access questions will follow immediately.

Good thing in 2010 and higher they have an "magical" button that converts macros to VBA for you.

(Might be in 2007 too but I can't remember)

The conversion function goes back to at least 2000.

Get Rick Fisher's Find and Replace. Saved my sanity more than once when I was developing db and decided to change stuff. Costs about $50. I am sure there are other 3rd-party apps for the same purpose but this one was recommended to me and it never has failed me.
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.

Don't discount thier 'naming convention' to fast, it will help you through understanding thier system. But yes a proper convention is best, use all of the available comment sections on your tables and forms/form fields, reports....with some sort of conversion text including old/new names.
