Do I need to know or have SharePoint to develop a web database with Access 2013?

I want to start developing Web-databases using Ms Access 2013. I do NOT have any knowledge of SharePoint and many of my clients(if not all) do not have SharePoint. Can I still use Access 2013 to develop web databases? I have developed web-based applications using Visual Studion and I only needed a web-server and a web-browser, WHY then is SharePoint seem to be emphasized with Access databases?

Apparently, no. Sharepoint seems to be the only technical approach for hosting Access databases on the web. You can go on into SQL server or deeper into Microsoftland if you choose:

Here's a great article suggesting ten approaches to taking a database to the web. It's really only about six technical options, plus a few ways to get you there:

If I were trying to avoid Microsoft (Sharepoint/SQL Server/365) then I'd probably go with the Oracle SQL Developer/MySQL route for a good architecture that's mostly free.
