Access 2010: ODBC Database - add/remove fields in Design View?

When adding a field in the ODBC database linked table in Access 2010, I got this error message:

"MyTable is a linked table whose design cannot be modified. If you want to add or remove fields or change their properties or data types, you must do so in the source database."

Does that mean that I can only add rows or edit the data BUT cannot add fields or alter data types (e.g. from varchar to int)?
Does it mean that I cannot remotely edit the SQL database in Access?

That is correct. You cannot change the properties of a linked table in Access. If you want to alter any properties (or add any fields), you must do so in the source database.
