Exclamation "Error in loading DLL." Error Message

I'm not sure if this is really something that this board can help me with, but I figured "what the hey, I'll give it a try anyways!"

So, the problem is on a computer at work, so I'm limited as to what additional programs I can install: I can't use a newer version of the Runtime, nor can I uninstall/reinstall Office or Windows (they're OEM copies and I don't have the proper installation CDs).

One of the computers here has mysteriously started giving the error message "Error in loading DLL." when you try and run any of our Access MDBs. The computer is using the Access 2000 Runtime alongside a full install of Office 2000 Small Business Edition. The computer is running Windows XP (fully up-to-date).

    So far, I have tried:
    • Uninstalling and reinstalling the Access 2000 Runtime
    • Repairing the Office 2000 Small Business Edition install (I can't uninstall/reinstall - it's an OEM copy and the CD is at our corporate offices half a continent away)
    • Manually re-registering all "References" drivers used by our databases:
      • Visual Basic for Applications
      • Microsoft Access 9.0 Object Library
      • OLE Automation
      • Microsoft DAO 3.6 Object Library
      • Microsoft Windows Common Controls 6.0 (SP6)
      • Microsoft Calendar Control 9.0

    • Reinstalling MDAC 2.81
    • Installing the following Registry entry:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{00025E01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\5.0\0\win32]

    @=hex(2):25,00,43,00,6f,00,6d,00,6d,00,6f,00,6e,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72, 00,61,00,6d,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,4d,00,69,00,63,00, 72,00,6f,00,73,00,6f,00,66,00,74,00,20,00,53,00,68,00,61,00,72,00,65,00,64, 00,5c,00,44,00,41,00,4f,00,5c,00,64,00,61,00,6f,00,33,00,36,00,30,00,2e,00, 64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00
    None of this has worked.

I'm currently working on getting the corporate offices to ship me the OEM CDs for Windows and Office, but - best case scenario - it will be another day or two before those get here.

Anyone have any ideas on what else I can try in the meantime?

This error indicates an improperly registered DAO file. TO resolve this error, you should try to re-register your DAO library:

    tanvi,

Thanks for your reply, but that was one of the first things I tried. Our DBs here use DAO 3.6 Object Library and I was able to confirm that the correct file is located on the computer and re-register it successfully. No dice

Today I'm going to try and install the full version of Access on the computer to see if that will fix the problem (or at least give me a more descriptive error message). Here's hoping!

Turns out it was actually due to some type of database corruption.

We keep a "clean" copy of the front-end stored on our server, and each time someone logs in, that copy is copied to the user's computer (this also serves to automate updates to the DB). Well, one of the other users started having the same issue. So, after trying everything I could think of since yesterday, I finally decided to try pulling the last version out of a backup...

Lo and behold, it works fine now! It was just weird, because Database corruption was one of the things I considered. Apparently this was an issue that a Compact & Repair couldn't solve.

    I'm marking this thread solved.
