Trying to share data base from desktop to laptop

I have a big data base on the desktop. I want to access it from a laptop to make changes or add while the desktop is being used on another program by someone else. I have been trying this for a year now. I am a real novice so please explain step by step if possible? I can see the desktop on other programs and share with no problem.?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you split your db into FrontEnd and BackEnd?

    Huh???

I am really a novice here. I hired someone to build this data base that we operate our time and attendance with for our Human Service company a few years ago. We know how to operate it and run some querys. But that is it. So I don't even know what a "front end" is. Sorry.

But we are really looking for help because we made it work once but are now being told it can't be done?

2002, Same as on the desktop machine. We were going to convert to 07 which I have on a few machines but was told by a Professor at the State University that we could not?

Anyway, we are going to stay with the 2002 version until we have to switch. The data base we have is very extensive and took months to build so it works with our working with disabled clients and all the billing that goes with the State and Federal programs.

Thanks much for getting back to me. It feels good that maybe there is an expert out there that might be able to make this work.

We have tried even an IT consultant and they could not make it work!

Have you shared the folder that contains the db so it will be visible on the network? How about the OS? WinXP on both?

XP on both, desktop is set to share all files. I share QUICKBOOKS and it works fine. I can get other files as well. I can see the DB but when I open it, it doesn't bring over the newest data. It still has the old data from that one time it did work? I wonder if the desktop has upgraded something so that when the laptop looks for the file or tries to open the desketop db, it can't for some reason?

It acts almost like we are running a different version but both say 2002 ver 10?

I checked both machines and they are the same version 10.6771.6845 SP3

Thought that might be the answer but guess not.

Are they both Home Edition or Pro? How big is the db? Is there more than one mdb?

XP Pro on both Big data base but how can I measure it to tell you. Very complicated. It is set up to track time and attendance by employee/customer. It totals hours by various staff to each customer and each client to their billing source. MDB??

152MB...pretty good size but nowhere near the 2GB limit. Is it an MDB file or MDE? Is there more than one?

There is a file for the data base and a file for the data It says Microsoft Access application for the file type? The data file is larger than the DB. The DB is directed to go to the data file to pull information?
