Query on a linked table?

I intend to run queries on data stored/entered into a SharePoint list that will auto-fill forms with similar data fields. To do this I have linked a sharepoint list with access, and I intended to be able to write queries that would extract data into excel and word files.
The problem is that when I am selecting the linked access table for my query in excel, I get back the message "Cannot access table (tablename)". Is what I am trying to do even possible, or am I going about this wrong.

Sounds like permissions issues within SharePoint or Access. Have you checked your permissions on these?
