    Multiple Users Can't Read

    Our database is located on a central server.

    The database allows a user with permissions/full access to open the database, but if it is already open by one of those users it does not default to the usual read only document.

    This message pops up... "Could not lock file" and then it goes to the Access home page where you end up when you open the Access program from scratch.

    Any ideas on how to get it back to just having read permission when someone is using the database?

    Cheers,

    In your options, is your db set to exclusive use only. Not sure where this in AC2010, but in 2003 and earlier it is in Tools, Options, Advanced. You may have to hunt around the File Menu.

    Options in Access

    I looked through the database options and it doesn't appear to have an option for set exclusive use.

    I checked the properties on right click with the file closed as well and it wasn't there.

    Any other possibilities? Thank you for replying so quickly also!

    Cheers,

    In 2010, File-->Options-->Client Settings--->Advanced

    Look to see if the db is shared or exclusive

    Perhaps your db is corrupted. Try a compact and repair. If that does not work, then open a new db and import all the objects into the new db and see if that works.

    Creating a new DB and then importing all of the tables / reports etc worked, however, when I went to assign new permissions for specific people on the network the same problem happened.

    Removing those permissions did not remove the problem however. What may be causing this?

    I am out of answers, hopefully someone who works with permissions will help you on this. I don't. I limit accessibility by using the procedure in the link below. You may want to look at this and see if it works for you.

    It is clean and relies on the UserName for Windows Login.
