Newbie getting stuck with summing queries

    Hi all

Quick intro, just trying to brush up on my access skills for work- i know the very very basics, so thought I'd have a go at creating my own mini db at home.

I've decided to create two simple tables - one (Food_Stats)with nutritional info about food eg kcals, fat content, carb content etc for a list of foods, per portion. The other table is the data input table (Food_Intake) where I will note down what I've eaten each day - eg. 01/01/2012, 1 portion, tomatoes.

The idea is to link the tables to produce a report to show an analysis of what i've eaten each week. However I've stumbled upon a problem when it comes to summing up data in relation to portions....

I need the database to multiply the number of calories, fat, carb etc for the "food" per the portions stated in the data input table. I can't seem to work out how to do this. I've linked the tables tried doing a basic sum but obviously it doesn't take into account the portions from the input table. When I try to do:

    =[Portion].[Food_Intake]*[kcals].[Food_Stats]

it asks to add parameter values?!

I'm probably doing something completely wrong , and I know I could do this really easily in excel, but I really want to start to master access. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Can you show us the table designs including datatypes?

Where exactly are you doing this =[Portion].[Food_Intake]*[kcals].[Food_Stats]
