Unable to open front end of split database

    Hi everyone,

I am having an issue with a database (and all my recent backups!). The front end of the database will not open (it opens, but closes immediately). The back end still opens fine.

My suspicion was that the Front End can't find the Back End tables. Is there a way of confirming this? (Nothing appears to have been moved...)

The front end has a few local tables, so even if the back end was moved, it still should have opened without the back end tables.

I did try Searching for an answer, as I suspect this problem is common.

I'm not sure what is preventing my front end file from opening. I'd really like to diagnose what happened and how to prevent this from repeating before I have to rebuild everything I've done.

    Any help is much appreciated!

Will it open if you hold down a <SHIFT> key?

Did you keep <SHIFT> down long after it started to open? Have you tried *importing* everything into a fresh new db and see if the problem follows? http://www.btabdevelopment.com/ts/impnew

Based on the link above, I was able to import everything (except one module, which I have a backup for elsewhere) into a new database.

The linked tables that were imported are pointing to the correct back end database, and there is a local table in the front end anyway, so I'm still not sure why the front end (and all of its back ups) are refusing to open.

I kept shift held down the entire time - no difference (Access opens file, I briefly see the notification bar, then the file closes and it's as if I simply started Access without opening a file).

Given that backing up my front end is not protecting against this issue, I really need to figure out what I did wrong before I can rebuild

So by using the one module from the backup, are you able to get you system to work as expected?

The rebuilt front end seems to be working. Still have no idea what was wrong, though.

(Fortunately, this database isn't in "production" yet.)

Corruption can manifest itself in a number of different ways. Pinning down exactly what is wrong can be almost impossible in many cases. Here's some tips on corruption:

It's confusing though as it wasn't as if one file got corrupted - it is one file and all the previous versions/backups (local and network) that have stopped opening.

I will definitely factor the tips provided into my development process (I'm thankful it was the Front End that went and not the back end!)

    Thanks again for your help!

I am experiencing the same issue. When I use the database splitter on the clients system, I have the issue with opening the front-end when I move both the FE and BE to my computer. When I split it on my computer, the client cannot open it on hers. If I manually create the FE by importing all of the UI objects into a new database, it works fine. It appears to be something related to the way the database splitter works.

I use code similar to the following to link up the BackEnd each time the FrontEnd is opened. http://allenbrowne.com/ser-13.html
