parameter query not working

i have an access database that connects via odbc to our as400. the program has worked fine for years. now any paremeter query that prompts you for the parameter gets an ODBC call failed. if i hard code the parameter into the query, it works fine. for example, [begin date] prompts you for a date, this doesnt work, now if i type in 20110201 in the query, it works. i have been pulling my hair out on this one. anyone have any help on this.

What was changed just before the problem showed up?

i talked to our IT, but they say nothing. could be some change to the as400 but why would it work when i hard code the parameter into the query and not when using a prompt. this happens on all my queries that i prompt a parameter for.
