Document control database with 2 numbering systems for the documents

    Hi,

I just started with MS access. Since on my last project there were a huge amount of documents to be submitted and reviewed I want to make a database to make this process easier in the future.

The problem I have is the following:

There is an official document numbering system which I got to work. But there are projects/subproject which use a custom numbering based on client requests.
I don t know how to model this in access.

Do I need to make an extra table where in 1 field with the official number and 1 field with the custom number. If there is no official number the custom number is required. But that means a table with a lot of blanks.
Or can I combine it in 1 table? There i run into the problem that the fields for the official number are obliged so I cannot enter only a custom Number.

Please find below the current tables

See the "document" related data models at this link
    http://www.databaseanswers.org/data_models/index.htm
They may offer some insight for your design.

There are several Planning and Design articles in the link in my signature.

    Good luck with your project.
