    Error 3188

Since a few months we have a problem with memo fields that are longer than 255

We get the message "Could not update; currently locked by another session on this machine"

If the field is 255 or shorter there is no problem.

We can add a new record with text longer than 255, but we cannot change it anymore.

    How to solve this problem?

I came across this type of problem five or so years ago, maybe longer, and it took me ages to resolve. I'm going from memory now, can't find my notes.

My issue was that for particular records I could not save the record and got the same error message you are reporting. It was always the same record(s) and yet go to any other record I could make any changes I wanted, no error messages.

The problem related to the fact that I had two or more recordsets (Forms) open at the same time based on the same Table. In each of those recordsets, a Memo field was present. If the length of the Memo field was < 2000 characters (or thereabouts, can't recall the exact figure, probably 2048) then attempting to save a record was successful. If, on the other hand, the length of the Memo field was > 2000 and attempting to save the record I got the error message. I was not editing in the Memo field, it was other fields edited but still got the error message.

My set up at the time was that I had a record listing form, a detail record viewing form and an edit/add form. In my listing form, the underlying recordset also included the Memo field, which wasn't needed for a listing form. I removed the Memo field from that recordset (of the listing form) and the problem went away. It was/is a known bug.

Further to my last, I came across this site I bookmarked many years ago related to this problem.

Adding a memo field > 2000 is not a problem. But changing it.

Does that occur for all such records? At the time of editing, are any other recordsets open (other forms) based on the same table? If not, then is a different scenario to what I thought.

Yes this is for all such records. All memo fields > 2000
