it is in principle, but perhaps might be slow for large amounts of data. Why not just sort the table in the report? Note that sorting the query recordsource is pointless for reports - you do it in the report itself. If this is insufficient then you need to provide some example data and the basis for ranking.
You can in a report, the query has field,Rank =1,
then in the report turn on running sum,for Rank.
sort the query by the field you want and the rank will grow.
As the previous two answers have suggested its easy to do in a report.
