A beginner's question on how to design a gambling database using Access

I have been using Excel to keep track and analyze betting opportunities in college basketball and other sports. My file has become quite large and I am trying to migrate to Access. My Excel flat file consists of the following column headings and each row is a game:

    1. Game date
    2. Team ("Away team")
    3. AScore ("Away Team Final Score")
    4. APtSpread (Away Team Point Spread)
    5. Anumber1 (proprietary)
    6. Anumber2 (proprietary)
    7. Anumber3 (proprietary)
    8. Anumber4 (proprietary)
    9. AConf (Away Team Conference)
    10. AResult ("W" if Away Team's Score plus or minus Away Team Final Pt Spread is greater than Home Team Score ("L" if less than Home team Score)
    11. Hteam (The following columns are the same information above but for the Home Team)
    12. HScore
    13. HPtSpread
    14. Hnumber1
    15. Hnumber2
    16. Hnumber3
    17. Hnumber4
    18. HConf
    19. HResult

I tried importing the above Excel file into a blank Access database, but the Table Wizard analyzed it and left in the form titled "Sheet 1", not "Table 1". The Wizard's message basically says that the file is "too flat" and needs more "relationships." Each row is a game

By the way, Access began with the first data row in the file and assigned an ID of "1", then "2", "3", etc.

I have looked through three books I have on using Access, but I just can't figure out what I need to do to solve this.

I apologize for what is most like a very simple question, but I would appreciate help to "get the ox out of the ditch."

    Thank you and best regards,

    Bob

    Welcome to the forum....

    Need a little more info.

I prefer individual sports: Tennis, Boxing, MMA, etc, so some of your terms are meaningless to me.
I see somewhere around 6 tables to begin with.

    First a couple of questions.
    1) What are Anumber1, Anumber2, Anumber3 & Anumber4? (and the same for Home) They are calculations?
    2) What are examples of conferences?
    3) The Home Team and the Away Team are in the same Conference?

It would really help if you could post a spreadsheet with a few games in different sports. Maybe 4 games each in 3 different sports??

Based on the info you have provided about the Spreadsheet columns, you might start out with

I would suggest you work through the Tutorials at Rogers Access Library. Actually take the time to do the tutorials, not just watch them. Should take around 45 minutes each.

Thank you very much, Steve, your diagrams explained a lot! I will also go to Roger's library.

    Thanks again and best regards,

    Bob

Not my area of expertise (I'll watch games but don't generally care about the outcomes/standings), but I think the conference would be in the teams table not the games table. NCAA has conferences like the Pac-12, Big-10, etc. Teams belong to a conference. They will play games against teams of the same conference but also teams of other conferences. You'll hear an announcer say "they're 3 and 1 in the conference, 5 and 2 overall". That would mean they've played 4 games against conference teams, 3 against teams from other conferences.

    @Paul
You are probably correct. I don't watch any games (and wouldn't know who to cheer for in the Super Bowl - the Lakers or the Red Sox), so I have absolutely no idea where the field would/should go. Hopefully, Bob (the OP) will know and be able to adjust the tables.
