Forcing a change in the default value on a form

I have a form called frmsalvage with a option group titled disposition status. I have four radio buttons inside labeled New, Scrapped, Pending, and Released. It is by default set on New when the record is created. When the salvage is worked and the rest of the form filled out I would like to make the person entering the data have to change the disposition status.
