Shared network folder unable to save database

I have a database shared on a company share drive, in a folder accessible to all office workers (6 of us). I just tried to test it out with a co-worker, I have default open set to Share and default record locking set to Edited Records. When one of us goes to open the database after the other, we get an error saying we need exclusive access to the database to open it. I switched Edited Records to no records and we were able to both work on separate forms, but when I tried to save my work while she was still in the database I got an error. Is there anyway around this or will this just be how it works?
