    Access opening linked tables

My database is suddenly trying to open linked tables when I open one of the forms on the database, it didnt' do it on Friday, but has now started doing it. I've seen some mentions of it on Google but with no solutions, does anyone know what this could be?

I've tried Compact and Repair, but still nothing.

If it only does so on one form, then perhaps your form is corrupted
Try decompiling or create a new version of your form

Thanks this has made things better, no more crashing, but now I'm getting this error
The Microsoft Office Access database engine cannot open or write to the file ''. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view and write its data.

this is because a colleague is using a linked table. the only way for me to get it to work is open up the linked spreadhseet myself as read-only.

Is there any way of preventing this? and allowing users to open the linked table and for Access to be okay with that?

First of all which method did you use to fix the original issue
Secondly the new issue doesn't make a lot of sense - how is the linked table being used?
Is it a spreadsheet file? If not, why are you referring to a spreadsheet?

I decompiled, but the initial issue returned as soon as my colleague used the linked Excel table again.

The linked table is an excel spreadsheet that needs to be updated by certain people. I need my database to retreive some of the data inputted into that.

the linked table is a microsoft Excel spreadsheet file.

Very strange, I've just realised that Excel is also opening spreadsheets that are linked automatically. So for exmaple there is a spreadsheet that VLookups another and it automatically opens the one the Vlookup is looking at, without asking permission or anything like that.

Could it be an Excel issue?

I've just tested this in a database with linked spreadsheet files & can't replicate your problem.

If the spreadsheet file is already open in Excel, Access won't allow me to open it for editing
If its opened in Access, Excel won't allow me to open the file.

In both cases, the applications are preventing any risk of conflict occurring which is how it should be
