Error, changing into symbols or chinese(?) letters when grouping

I've encountered a strange error. When trying to either group or crossreference data from a query, two certain fields have their values converted into something resembling chinese letters, some of them perhaps greek symbols.

I've made a workaround by converting the data into String using CStr, but I am worried about it and does not knwo the root of the problem. I'd like to be able to counter it more effectively.

    Any suggestions?

is the default property of the table a standard font=english? ....like a font of Times Roman or Arial,
    not Bob's font.

this problem occurs with memo type fields when you group on them for example

The two troublesome columns are "memo" type fields.

But this is funny, I cannot seem to replicate the error now, even thuogh I try to group the fields again.

Anyway, I consider the case clsoed. Thanks for your help.

Fun fact: The error appeared again, but I solved it by converting the content to String (CStr). When converting both sides of a join to String, I managed to get a working query out of it.
