link a report field to similar field in a form

I am using an access template for asset tracking.
The template was set up so that when a field called [PartNumber] is clicked in a report called 'Assets By Category', it opens up the corresponding item in a form called 'Asset Detail'. In other words if you click on a part number in the report, it brings up the same item in the form.
How do I write the condition = that matches the two up? I have: Where condition = ="[Item]=" & [Item]. No matter what Item I click on in the report, I get only the first part in asset details, and not the specific one I'm looking for. I'm doing something wrong but do not understand. Thank you!
