The id is a unique key Autonumber field say ID 25 out of say 3000, when appended to another table with identical fields and then appended back to original table, the original table next ID becomes 26 and not 3001.

autonumber only guarantees a unique number, not a consecutive one
by appending the original table autonumber field with a value which is not already there, it is unique, so accepted.
Not sure if the autoincrement will recognise that the 'next' number already exists (eg. on 3000, so tries to increment to 3001) it may or may not, you would need to experiment.
FYI stuff...
AutoNumber
--------------
Purpose Use an AutoNumber field to provide a unique value that serves no other purpose than to make each record unique. The most common use for an AutoNumber field is as a primary key, especially when no suitable natural key (a key that is based on a data field) is available.
