No, do not depend on the autonumber to be sequential/ordered.

Autonumbers are meant to be unique -- not necessarily sequential, not necessarily positive.

Determine what field you want as your sort field, and if necessary, add your own values to that field whose purpose is to ORDER the records in the sequence you need.

Did you look at the links I provided in earlier post?

Damn it, I don't know how I managed to read all the signs saying autonumber was explicitly not meant for sorting, and then concluded it should be used for sorting.

I'd still like to know though, should I still use autonumber when I already have a list of unique IDs?

    My personal opinion:
I would.... Especially if the unique IDs are text. It takes longer to index/sort on text fields (I read that somewhere a long time ago).
I always (well 99.9% of the time) have the PK field an autonumber.

You can use an autonumber for sorting, but you will be sorting by a field that has no real world meaning.

Had some time to kill, so I played around with your example.......renamed, relinked, made a form, usual stuff

I've gone the other way. Most of my db's have not use autonumber as PK and indexing speed has not been an issue, however, they are all relatively small.
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.
