    How to generate watch bill

    Hello,

I am trying to use Access to automatically generate watch bills (a list of who will man what watch station for each portion of a 24-hour day based on various factors such as qualifications, skills, injuries, etc).

So far I have created the following tables:
    - A table of all personnel with a column for all of their qualifications
    - A table of all watch stations and what qualifications are required for said watch station
    - A table for all the watches that must be stood in a given week

How can I use Access to automatically generate a watch bill for a given week using these tables?

    Thanks!

    Max

If you are still working on this there are a number of things to consider and I think we'd probably need more information.

Do you have a sample database you could share? What are you currently using to track this? a spreadsheet that you fill out by hand each week? if so, how do you go about filling it out, because that is likely the same methodology you would want to use in your automated process.

    - A table of all personnel with a column for all of their qualifications
    - A table of all watch stations and what qualifications are required for said watch station
this implies your data is not normalised - which among other things means it will be exceedingly difficult to achieve what you want - if indeed it is even possible

I suggest you need more tables

tblPersonnel - name, contact details etc
    PersonnelPK - autonumber
    PersonnelName - text
    ...
    ...

    tblwatchstations - location etc
    WatchstationPK - autonumber
    WatrchStationLocation - text
    ...
    ...

    tblqualifications
    - list of qualifications
    QualificationPK autonumber
    Qualifaction - text
    ...
    ...

and then you need some linking tables to associate qualifications with both personnel and watchstations

    tblPersonnelQualifications
    PersQualPK - autonumber
PersonnelFK - long - link to PersonnelPK
QualificationFK - long - link to QualificationPK
    Expires - date
    ...
    ...

    similar for WatchStationQualifications
