Primary Key icon disabled, and other odd things

When I create a new table the Primary Key icon is disabled during design. When the table is created it does not appear in the Navigation Pane until I exit and re-open the database. The same behaviour occurs with other new objects. The Design tab disappears randomly. If I create a new empty database it exhibits the same behaviour.

The normal behaviour when creating a new table in design view is the primary key icon is disabled until you click on a field you have already created. Are you saying that you create one or more fields, then go back to the one you want to set as a primary key and the icon remains disabled?

It could be where your cursor is. It must be on the field name row. Then It enables.
