Access 97 to 2013 conversion issues?

Hi I did some research(a whole 2 months worth) on converting an Access 97 database to 2013. I came up with the fact that it need to be converted to 2003, meaning I made a new BLANK DB with 2003 then imported my stuff an saved as mdb. After that I repeated the same import steps to get it into 2007. Now for 2007 when I saved the new DB on a blank one, it was saved as a .accdb

The reason for this is because I wanted to open it into access 2010. After creating a new blank DB and importing to 2010 I saved it with the default format which is 2007-2010 format. Now we go to 2013, I repeated the same import steps only as I import its telling me "Cannot open with a previous version of your application". Note that ONLY THIS VERSION OF ACCESS gives me this message and I had no issues with the other version. So basically I cannot open certain tables/forms/queres etc except by viewing the code. I even tried a clean re-install of Access 2013 just in case and I still get the same issues?

Any ideas? I'd rather not post my db for legal purposes.

2013 sucks sooooo bad. I don't know why Microsoft released it.

Access 2013 does not play well with Access 2007. Go directly from 2003 to 2013 (or 2010 in between if required).

ah ok I will try that instead. I'll probably reply back on Wednesday since I don't work today. But you should be aware that I tried going from 2003 to 2013 and still the same issues. So I will try 2003 to 2010 then to 2013.

I converted DB to 2007 .accdb format then used 2010 to convert it back to .mdb format just to test/try something new(before I just kept it as .accdb) but still the same issues?
Mind being specific on the conversion between the access versions when I am going from 2003-2010-2013?

Please provide more detail on what exactly are the issues you are having. Did you test everything in the 2003 version and was everything working as expected? Same question for 2010. Did you compile it successfully? Compact/Repair? etc etc.

You shouldn't have to put the 2010 in between, so maybe the db isn't working properly before that.

Im trying to convert my databases from 1997-2013, the databases work fine in 2003,2007, an 2010. The reason Im testing them in these different versions of access was because I was told that in order to go from 1997-2013 u gotta do it in stages(1997-2003-2007-2010 then 2013), goin version to version. So after the db gets into 2010(which everything works) I import it over to 2013 an while I import it states "cannot open with a previous version of you application". It gives me this message for certain tables/forms/queries etc.. Now I want to know y? I was givin a few suggestion which I will try out when I get to work. ONLY 2013 gives this issue, the other
Access verion work fine with DB.

So now im askin if I go from 1997-2003-2010
What format should I save the 2010 in(it has option to keep mdb or save as .accdb which is 2010 format)? Since someone said 2007 an 2013 hate eachother, ill redo the process but excluding goin into 2007?

According to Microsoft you can go directly from 97 to 2010 (using accdb) - see https://support.office.com/en-us/art...4-DB0CF7C11ACD. From there it is a simple matter to go to 2013. Are you doing this on different computers or using different versions of Access?

Attach your 97 db if you can.

I cant attach my db, YET, since I haven't tried any of the solutions presented, however I am at a fork in the road? Should I go from 97-2010 or do 97-2003-2010? It might be a redundant question meaning it doesn't matter since the formats will be the same, but then again, if the formats didn't matter my .accdb database that was converted should have everything working in 2013(but it doesn't).

So which option do you think I should try FIRST?

Should I compact and repair before I go from 97 to 2010? And does compact an repair actually make a difference?

When you open the db in 2010 and save as an accdb it will compact and repair. But yes, it is always good to keep the db in good maintenance.

Ok I pretty much tried everything, both Microsoft option, and going from 2003-2010 then to 2013 but it still is giving me on certain LINKED tables and forms that it cannot open with a previous version of my application?? I am out of options. I'm just about to tell my boss that it cannot be done in 2013 unless the DB is completely re-created or she should just use access 2010 instead of 2013 since 2010 is not giving any issues.

Interesting! There must be some undocumented features (no kidding!).

For the tables, can't you relink them? For the forms, you could try the same as for a corrupted database - SaveAsText from 2010 and LoadAsText into 2013. http://www.allenbrowne.com/ser-47.html

As Access has matured it becomes less and less tolerant of poorly written/defined code, field and table names - so always a good idea to ensure all modules have Option Explicit at the top and you compile the code at each 'upgrade' to ensure no errors. Also be aware that there are features in 2003 and earlier which are not supported in 2007 and later. The menubar system comes to mind (replaced with ribbon), also the old security and replication are no longer supported. Other possibilities include out of date references and shifting from 32bit office to 64 bit office requires modification to API calls. You can google to find out what has been deprecated since 97 and when

If your db is not split (tho' it sounds like it is) you may have introduced some corruption somewhere along the way, I would split it and migrate the backend tables up the upgrade path followed by the front end. I seem to recall reading somewhere that lookups in tables and field names which are reserved words can cause issues due to the change of db engine.
