    Meter Read Database

I am just making the jump to Access. I'm pretty good at Excel. My first task is to create a meter database. We want it to store data about the meters, S/n, Name, Location, etc. We also want to be able to log the manual readings in a quick way for each meter. This is where im having trouble in design. Should this all be separate databases? Should i make a table for each meter, storing only the readings or should i make a table for readings with all meters for that months in it?

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

Here are some free concept videos for Database concepts

    Basics of data modelling

Spend 30-45 minutes working through one of these tutorials from RogersAccessLibrary. They show the Problem, the Process and include solutions. You can use this technique with any database.

You have to work through the exercise to appreciate the process and result.

No to both. A single table for readings with a field for meter and a field for date. That way you can easily query for one meter or many, one month or many.

Being pretty good at Excel probably puts you at somewhat of a disadvantage. The most common problem with that is that one tends to approach Access design with what I call a spreadsheet mentality, but I suppose paradigm might be a better choice of words. I have not checked out the provided links, but will present a few of my own favorites for other aspects that those may not cover but are of paramount importance for a newcomer.

Thank you all. I am going to look at your links during lunch this week.

I got to talk to someone familiar with SQL and they said the same thing as you Micron. I am starting to see what you mean. I was wanting to put every unit type, location, etc into separate tables. He nixed that, but didn't have much more info.
