WOW!! After following all the recommendations - mainly changing the key structure on both tables - the update query was finished in minutes. It took longer to save the table changes (about 30 minutes) than it took to run the query - less than 15 minutes!! Just goes to show, do things the way Access wants and voila, good stuff happens.

In addition to ajax's link and great info, here is an older free video from Datapig that describes and shows information related to indexing MsAccess table/fields.
Another question on this same thread (am I supposed to start a new one?).
What difference if any does the size of the fields in linking make to the running time of the query? Say there is a text field of 20 char linked to a text field of 255 char, would it matter? It is the same field, just two dba's (or one dba and one non-dba!).
